EU Blue Card immigration scheme expected in 2011As part of a French-led immigration pact, European Union interior ministers discussed the Blue Card immigration directive on 25 September 2008. The blue card would provide an all-in-one work and residence permit for highly skilled professionals from outside the EU. It's expected that the EU Blue Card will go into effect by 2011. Applicants would have to be earning 150% of the gross average salary in the country they want to live and work in, or 120% for jobs for which there is a shortage of skilled labor. Blue Card holders would still be able to bring their family members and permanent residence would be available after a set period of time. In a change to initial plans, EU member states would retain greater control over whether to allow a blue card holder entry. |
