EU Blue Card to see debate this summer?Well, it's been quite on the EU blue card front lately but we may see some info come to light in June. In an op-ed at EurActiv, Lars Hoffmann writes that the European Council will decide on a report entitled Project Europe 2030, which included recommendations on the blue card immigration scheme: "It is for the June European Council to decide the report's fate...There are some excellent proposals in the report (e.g. a Blue Card for European immigrants...)." The EU blue card is meant to be a method for non-EU citizens to work in the European Union on a temporary basis, albeit with an option for permanent residence after some time. The blue card is inspired by the United States Green Card and will allow non-EU citizens working in the EU under the program to bring family, and even move to another country in the EU if they receive a job offer there. Details of the EU blue card are still pending and subject to change, but one thing is clear: the European Union will need outside workers to aid its aging economy in the coming decades. |
